It also provides phpMyAdmin - a web interface for maintaining databases. For a beginner it would be much easier. It can be downloaded freely at http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/files/XAMPP%20Linux/1.7.3a/xampp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz/downloadand many others.
