Hi, I would like to present a gist of the unconference held on last Saturday at MIT. As planned already talks and discussions on 10 topics took place according to the schedule.
The introductory session by Amachu was followed by the first topic which started at 9.30. 1. The first topic (by Sukumar, Vinoth, Vignesh and SAG Arun) covered the basic concepts of how multiple languages are handled in a Free (Linux-based) OS and how the translation modules are packaged. 2. Vinodh Rajan gave an overview of IPA and conversion of text to phones that he has done already 3. Akilan explained about the various Free Software licences, their variations and the compatibility among them. 4. Nagaraja explained his project on Tamil OCR and Tesseract and the future works. 5. Vinodh Rajan explained about his web application for transliteration among Indic languages followed by Dr.Muthukumar explaining about Machine translation 6. Dr.T Vasudevan explained how translation is done using POT, PO and MO files. 7. From his past experiences Ma Sivakumar presented his ideas on making software in Tamil, suitable for various commercial purposes and other organisations. 8. Prof.Muthukumar presented his idea of crawling web pages to build a Tamil corpus incrementally 9. Tamil based web applications - already existing ones and the ones that need to be developed were discussed by Ma Sivakumar and Prof.Muthukumar 10. Thangamani Arun presented his views on the need for a distro in Tamil with native Tamil feel.
