Weizenbaum wrote Eliza (the original doctor) back in the 1960's as a parody
of what can/cannot be accomplished by computers and AI.  Eliza represents
the genesis of chatterbots which offer natural and human-like interaction with
a computer.

To the OP: Wikipedia has a good write up on Eliza, Weizenbaum and his
book http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA.  All of them are recommended
reading if you want to get deeper into NLP, AI, etc.
