If you have no previous knowledge of Linux kernel or OS kernels in general, you could download the source code and start studying it in parallel with reading about Linux kernel from some standard books like 'Understanding the Linux kernel' by O'Reilly or some standard documentation online. When you are stuck somewhere in this process, you can always ask for help in clarifying the concepts. This will get you started on your aim to modify the Linux kernel for your needs.
