I assume that you have done updation from net when using earlier version.It is 
most likely that the update didn't detect your settings right. Try to reinstall 
boot loader from CD of your earlier version of ubuntu. If you have cd of 
current version, check if any option is there for reinstalling boot loader 
alone.

If you have live cd try mounting your disk partitions and post what is in /boot 
folder
