Yeah, at first I did not have the cat 5 cable plugged in and yet the knetworkmanager preferred to show the RJ45 icon in systray. I click on the icon and see that my WiFi AP is indeed visible to the laptop. I select the WiFi AP and get prompted for the WPA2 passphrase. I enter it, then it says trying to establish connection and then nothing happens. Nothing in /var/log/messages either. After quite a few unsuccessful attempts, I decided to make a wired connection and move on. The funny thing is, it worked when I used to invoke knetworkmanager manually from the KMenu. Then I configured it knetworkmanager to be in the systray after which I am unable to establish WiFi connection. > Even after I did that, I had issues in some cases, especially if we use > WEP128 Hex.
