In Debian till Etch, the easiest way to solve resolution issues was to use 'dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg'. But with Debian Lenny onwards, this doesn't work the way it was working. So I'd suggest you could use 'xdebconfigurator' and 'dexconf' commands to try solving this issue. (You may need to install them first).
