Hi,

For Fioinformatics, there are lots of programs "free"ly available. For 
phylogeny reconstruction there is 

Clustal (sequence alignment)
Seaview (sequence alignment editing)
Phylip (wonderful suite for phylogeny)
MrBayes (Bayesian phylogeny reconstruction) 

etc. 

Apart from that he can learn Bioperl and Biopython
