Hi,

Most of my friends are going to buy an SSD, mostly due to its quicker boot
time and random read and write speeds. As far as prices in India, SSDs are
definietly costlier, because a 2TB HDD costs 4.7k while a 30 GB Kingston one
costs 4k. The kingston is slow, but the intel ones available here is slow. One
of the main advantages for laptops is that portability is increased, because
the drive will have no moving parts, so no more head crashes. In benchmarking
it has been found that even the slowest SSDs are better for everyday use than
the fastest 10k WD Raptor drives. So, that might justify the price. Another
potential use for an SSD, is using it for the /, /usr, /var/ tm, usr/local,
/opt, /srv,etc,. and have /home and other Data storage partitions in a HDD.
This is especially useful for servers, where /var on the SSD, makes things
quite fast. Also, swap can be kept on the HDD, to reduce wear leveling. I think
ext4 with noatime, and /tmp and /var/tmp as RAM Drives, would a
lso reduce wear leveling. Yet to try btrfs...

Even on a HDD, according to Linus himself, noatime is a good fs option. As
a rule, in my all my linux boxes, I edit fstab in such a way, all my
partitions, except swap have the noatime option. I also include, two RAM
Drives, /tmp and /var/tmp. This is because data in both the partitions, don't
need to be stored after a restart.

 With Regards,
