Also mention ideo chipset. I am presuming the connection is DSUB-15 (analog VGA connector). Make sure your cable is good and connected tight at both ends. The newer Xorg do an autodetect and seem to override xorg.conf if it exists (from my observation). You mention you have reconfigured xorg in your OP. Can you tell us what you reconfigured.
