Mine is Compaq Presario V6000 Series (AMD Athlon X2 64 TK-55), me too experienced some glitches with Ubuntu i386 (To be true, ubuntu really sucks you know..). Switched to Debian x86_64 (Testing) ~2 years before. Solid as it is. But there are some minor things out there If you are using x86_64 architecture. 1. Flash is the biggest problem, seems they stopped developing flashplayer for linux 64bit. 2. Google-earth, skype, googletalk-plugin don't have 64bit version. you can install it, but libc32 and lot of core 32bit libraries will be installed along with them. So, your system's 64bit purity will be gone. I would suggest go for Mint LMDE x86_64.
