I am bit late with the reply, but I guess I have a not so bad solution.
The following script uses HAL to do the trick.

for udi in $(hal-find-by-capability --capability storage)
do
bus=$(hal-get-property --udi $udi --key storage.bus)
if [ $bus == usb ]; then
hal-get-property --udi $udi --key block.device
fi
done
