Laptop models have their own idiosyncrasies.  My experience with an
Acer 5542, circa Dec. 2009; it did not play well with Ubuntu and
Fedora but worked fine with openSUSE.

I suggest you try a couple of other Linux distros like Fedora,
openSUSE and settle with the one that works for your model.
Additionally, you may want to file a bug report with Ubuntu.
