I assume that you are connecting the two computers with a modem/router in between. Ensure that both the machines have correct DHCP IP address leased by modem/router. If you use a switch in between or if you connect the two computers directly give the correct IP addresses in both machines.
If possible check the Ethernet cable with a LAN tester or with another working network.
