Hi I too had a similar problem while upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 from Ubuntu 10.10. I then went ahead and installed Ubuntu 10.04. Try and install Ubuntu 10.04 and your computer should work fine. Then try upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 in case you want. I guess this will solve your problem.
