IIRC, Unison is a repository sync utility and not a back up utility alone. Rsync would be a back up utility as it backs up from a primary store to a secondary store. Unison is a two way sync using rsync as the underlying mechanism. The two repositories, thus would be peers and would be brought to the same state.
