Ok, I am not able to lay my grubby hands on that ever moving ubuntu box ;) On Centos 6.3: I did bump into imagemagick as one of the posters pointed out. It is a swiss army knife. And it produces humongous file sizes. Then there is a pdftk. and both are multi-platform. That helps me a bit to script out the tasks.
