Dear all,

A two days FOSS workshop was conducted by Dept. of Computer
Technology, MIT campus on August 24 & 25th.  Participants from various
colleges and universities attended the workshop.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Nike Hine (1), University of
Dundee, Scotland (UK) and presented his inspirational speech on
'Ethical Engineering'.  MIT Dean Dr. S.Thamarai Selvi insisted on the
importance of using FOSS for academic/research purposes which would
help improving the quality of engineering education.

Dr.C.N.Krishnan / Co-ordinator - NRC-FOSS spoke about the FOSS
activities of NRC-FOSS and team members Mr. Mohamed Imran, Mr. Sanjeev
Saini, Mr. Senthil Anand demonstrated Koha Library Management System,
FLS, M.Sc. FOSS courses.

Technical sessions with complete hands-on were given for the participants.

* Network interface configuration
* Package management setup / configuration using RPM (creating
repodata and serving it to clients)
* Installing / Configuring Samba, CUPS
* Kernel configuration, compilation and installation
* Virtualization using QEMU
* Setting up Version control system using SVN (SVNEdge)
* Compiling the source code by fetching from the Subversion server
* using build tools like autoconf, automake etc.
* GUI programming using Qt
* Filesystem implementation using FUSE

At the valedictory function, Dean Dr.S.Thamarai Selvi issued
certificates to the participants and requested the participant
colleges to make use of Free software in their institutions.
