I have built appliances using LEAF project of which I was a member.
Soekris was a hardware used by many. Since we were looking at 2/4GB
flash/CF, we used syslinux (Peter Anvin's project) and it worked well.
Syslinux is small and suffices when you need to use one OS alone.
