AFAIK,  HP creates OEM images of Windows with the hardware specific
drivers integrated into the OS.

It appears you have laptop which is "newer" than Ubuntu 10.04; it's
kernel may not have the driver for the NIC chip set. Try the latest
version and see if that fixes your problem.
