logger is what I use often in shell scripts which gets called by cron or
sometimes otherwise too

and one small thing to rememeber: KEEP AN EYE ON LOG FILE SIZE.

and then there is rsyslog. I am currently investigating ways to coerce
Winblows boxens to write their logs to a rsyslog server

will post results when I get to do that.
