There are a couple of bits that need to be cleared up.

[1] there is a growing number of young students who are interested in
picking up skills that help them use and contribute to upstream Free
and Open Source projects. While Google Summer of Code has certainly
stimulated this growth, the increasing number of hackathons, meetups
and, dev-camps have provided the environment in which quick hacks can
lead to interesting outcomes

[2] a good number of the above are moving away from traditional UGs
(perhaps because LUGs in India are often perceived to be "help me
install software or, configure hardware" social forums)

[3] the TWITCH group companies that you mention above are involved
both as consumers of Open Source as well as being contributors.
