A mention of the Client OS + version would have been helpful to use to
help you!   If the client OS is Linux then use NFS as an alternative
way to share files.

To the best of my knowledge Samba 3 can do only NT4 Domain Controller
and *not* ADS (Windows 2000 onwards).

Consider Samba 4 for MS ADS style domain controller.

Consider using a real DNS domain name and create a subdomain for
intranet use e.g. intra.example.com.    TLD .local is reserved for
multicast DNS (avahi on Linux).

Samba4 does MS ADS quite well and there are many YouTube video
tutorials.  It is almost install and play.
