I hope the existing kernel in Debian 4 (etch) is 2.6.18..  You can try the
following

Put the hard disk back to the old server, and try installing the latest
kernel (manually) for etch (2.6.24) from

http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/debian-installer/etchnhalf

and it should create a new initramfs image for the new kernel.

Now, put the hard disk in the new server and see it if boots properly after
upgrading the kernel.
