Dear folks, I have been using a 128 GB SSD disk in place of a regular SATA hard drive for one of my OpenBSD machines and the write speed is phenomenal.
So is the read speed which of course is still better. I am very happy. Only grouse being it is not 2Tb in size. ;) But we will get there. There are tools to measure disk RPM and read and write performance. I use iostat and you can perceive it thro' general copy and use performance. After all anything like Db or video uses the secondary storage heavily. Now change of topic. Recently my laptop got drenched in the terrace rain and the Windows7 I used to use for skype ,youtube, Chrome went away. Interestingly the hard disk is not destroyed but well Windows will not allow hard disk portability. Then I took a spare box and installed Debian Wheezy. I am typing this mail from that. Guess what? I don't need Windows anymore. Skype video with my webcam works, skype screen sharing works, youtube video works and the icing on the cake is the Google Chrome browser. Phenomenal! Moreover I don't miss firebug in firefox since Chrome comes with a Debian package to install the inline debugger(Ctrl+Shift+j). Overall I am very happy and pleasantly surprised. My reason for loving OpenBSD has got to do with my knowledge of the kernel of OpenBSD,FreeBSD,Linux etc. when I was developing IPsec stack in 2005. Anyway OpenBSD has several other things too but Linux has certainly graduates as a highly usable desktop OS. OpenBSD is more of serious server side stuff and engineer/scientist/hacker thing. -Girish -- Gayatri Hitech http://gayatri-hitech.com _______________________________________________ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc ILUGC Mailing List Guidelines: http://ilugc.in/mailinglist-guidelines
