Use Ubuntu latest live CD.  For newbie Debian is not recommended without
proper guidance. I had a hard time, personally.
Debian by default ends up in console mode , if you use only the CD1.
Therefore, I recommend Ubuntu.

Check with hp support about your linux installation. They have to guide you
because you are a customer.

Other than that you can always check for the particular simulation software
which runs on windows . Search in sourceforge.net If it is not available
then you can go for full Linux installation
