i too am facing the same prob. I have independent C-Media 8738 Sound Card ,4 spk & SPDIF. It has been working in linux since RH 6.1 but from
win95 to winXP it doesn't autodect & install on its own i have to install drivers to make it work.
Anyway in RH 9 too it plays only the front 2 speakers & not the rear ones. I have tried all the diffrent alternatives to vain.
Currently i am using OSS 3.9.7h & this makes all the 4 speakers work. But since it is a shareware i have some days left. I have to explicitly use soundon & soundoff to turn it off.
If u could solve this prob i would be glad to listen the sweet sound.

options cmpci four_ch=1
and reboot the machine.
have also tried options cmpci rear_ch=1
no luck.
got the above commands from a cmpci readme i downloaded earlier.
please attack this problem and let's try to solve it.
