Hi guys,

Thanks for the link, Puneet.

What follows is strictly my opinion. My employer's opinion
may be different.

I hate to be the Devil's advocate, but here goes.

I do not like the way ESR refers to bootlegging of
proprietary code - that lots of programmers have it, or
that companies either encouraged the practise or looked
the other way when such bootlegging was going on. It suggests
that the Unix community has had an uneasy relationship with
copyright law.

Further ESR suggests that this kind of behaviour is the
only defense against corporate control over digital media.
This reminds the average guy of Napster - and that Napster
lost their case. Further reinforcement that the Unix
community has trouble respecting copyrights.

So, who doesn't have any such trouble with Intellectual
Property ? Microsoft, thats who.

Indian Unixes on the Intel platform

An old Wipro hack once told me that Wipro had their own
"WINIX" that could "run on any 486" !

Further, HCL had a Unix 386/486 based minicomputer
called Magnum, middle-to-late 1980s. Further, HCL had
promised complete hardware independence to their customers.
I have forgotten name of this OS.

I am sure this list would be overjoyed to hear from
Wipro, HCL and other Indian Unix vendors - who did
not create proprietory Unixes. These OSes are our
<wink> glorious </wink> heritage.

Just my Rs 0.02.

Regards,
-- Pai
