hi,

i'll start with the problem right away.

i have two hdd. both samsung (40Gb), the existing one is a 5400 rpm, and
the other 7200 rpm (puma). i'd differentiate them by using A-5400rpm,
and B-7200rpm.

my setup now is thus:
/dev/hda = B
/dev/hdc = A
/dev/hdd = CD drive

A has lilo installed (Rh8.0)
B has grub installed (RH8.0).

combination 1: when i take A off from the system, the bios which is
directed to boot from HDD-0 boots into linux(from HDD B) fine.

combination 2: when i put A into the system in addition to B, i always
have the grub directing the root at /dev/hdc (A) for some unknown
reason.

note 1: the bootloader being run in both combinations is that of grub.
so that shouldnt be a problem.

note 2: a possible thing noted was that the dmesg gave a very odd two
line
hda: hda1 hda2
hdc: [PTBL] (4870/255/63) hdc1 hdc2 hdc3

why is the table only being recognized in hdc? is that a problem??

note 3: while installing rh8.0 on B, it did give a message saying that
the partition table was not aligned (or some similar message!) saying
that it was a correctable error, and do you wish to continue. i then
deleted all the partitions and installed rh8 on B the second time,
creating partitions using only the installer. even then i get this
problem mentioned above.

note 4: (V Important!) when i boot from A (combination 2) and when i do
a mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/temp. i get an error, in the sense the 10Gb
partition is shown as a 15Gb partition, with junk. but when i umount,
and do a mount -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /mnt/temp in the next command, the
partition's up and running with no problem. this in a way confirms the
doubt in note 3. but is there anything i can do about this???

does anyone have any idea as to why does the grub bootloader have an
affinity to my old hard disk? i hope its not loyalty!!

i'll send over config files etc. if anyone is willing to lookinto them.

affly
robins
