There are a couple of things you need to keep in mind
before you get familiar with Linux..
1) Read everything about it you possibly can
2) Read more...

2. am unable to play mp3 files on xmms though I can
successfully run
.wav files on the audio player
I got information about the following plugins from the
magazine LINUX
FOR U
XMMS Album List 0.6 / James Curbo
I downloaded it and then executed the exe file as per
the instructions
.
But there was no effect
I still couldnt run mp3 songs.
----->You need the XMMS MP3 Plugin, which you can
download from www.xmms.org and follow instructions..
3. I dont know the names of the basic applications
under linux
Like I know that in windows browser is internet
explorer or
netscape.i know that to play songs I can use
winamp or media-player..
Can u help me by giving some basic information about
these little
general utilities
---->Although it does take time to get used to
appnames in linux, i suggest you read one of the
zillions of "Beginners guides to Linux". The most
common appnames are mozilla, netscape (execute these
from the command line), xmms (for well, XMMS).
4. like in windows we have c: drived: drive
--------I can open
these folders and then see what is there inside them
but how do I access in LINUX ?
am not aware about : which extension implies what
type of file and
application
----> Linux drives are divided into formats which
follow this order - hda1, hdb2 etc. hd represents the
harddisk, a, b or c represents different physical
drives and 1,2,.. represent partition numbers. So,
look for hda1, hda2 etc (commonly so..).
5. is there some way by which I can access data on
my other partition
(where windows is installed ) through the linux.
----> Yes you can. Mounting a win drive is possible.
Find out your windows parition, and then follow the
instructions in the Beginners guide!

I tried sniffing coke once, but the ice cubes seemed to get in the way...
