Addendum to the problem,

When I do
telnet pop.xxx.com pop3 from my windows machine, i ge the proper expected
response from the POP server.

+OK InterMail POP3 proxy server ready
.................

However when I try the same command from my Linux system,

The telnet gives the connected message like : "Escape character is ^]" bu
then gives no response to any further commands / keystrokes.

Do I have a problem in my linux machine or the ISP end. Any idea
