We are planning to setup 1 Linux server at our office. Please advice us, how
we could implement it. I am giving a brief picture of our
present IT environment and our future needs hereunder:
Present System: Around 10 PCs are connected thru LAN without any Server.
They are PIV, PIII, PII, PI, Celeron etc. All are working in Windows 98 and
most our works are in MS office. Databases are in MS Access. Right now, we
created a Shared Folder in one PC and all important and sharable data are
storing there. Everybody can access this folder from their PCs. Everybody
using Microsoft Outlook for their work scheduling and Outlook Express for
Emailing.
Present Problems: less security for the data, there is no mechanism for
automatic backuping, one should able to view his team members work schedules
from his own terminal.
Requirements : Higher Level of Security, Some mechanism for Auto backuping,
Sharing of Oulook Schedules and Centralised Email Sytem with one General
Address Book on Server and Personal address book on each client. We have to
install some Webserver software on Server (it should support ASP & MS
Acess) - This webserver is only for internal hosting/testing purposes.
You may suggest, how Linux can solve our requirements, better than Windows
Server. However once we switch to Linux, still we should be able to send and
receive MS Office documents for other organisations/companies not operating
on Linux. Or else we could just keep Linux Server and all our clients in Windows only. Hop it is possible. Please also suggest what could be initial
investment including all softwares and annual maintanance cost. Hope it will
be lesser than Windows.
