I am not sure whether VNC can transport an active local X server display. VNC
servers startup an X server of their own and only display their display.

You dont need a IP level firewall to restrict access - the web proxy server(squid)
will do that.

Make everybody login through diskless nodes! :) You will know who all are
logged in.

Use talk with the KDE or gnome client.
