Could be an output plugin thingie. Select the appropriate output
plugin for your windowing system.
If you're playing directly to /dev/dsp, maybe you could chgrp audio
/dev/dsp and then add yourself to the audio group (usermod).

I'd use kscd or an equivalent application for playing CDs. They do
proper CDDB lookups; I don't know if xmms is CDDB-aware.
