I have posted this already, but just in case it helps.

I got the SM56 modem working on PCQLinux 8.0 (based on RedHat 8.0), after following 
the procedure described on http://www.sm56.tk . This involves recompiling the kernel. 
I can't give you a demo though as I have subsequently upgraded to Redhat 9.0 and 
haven't tried it again.
