glad you asked. just yesterday i finished doing some research on this.

for 2d drafting and most features of autocad use in india: QCadII,
available muft and mukt, from qcad.org (else google-search)

for nearly 80% and above functionality of autocad 2d and 3d, with no
extensions required, try linuxcad, which is commercialware, and costs
about US$99. it is still far less than autocad's price.

a good solution is to use a combination of the above two, and to also
use blender, and k3d, for heavy-duty 3d stuff as well. you'd be
surprised how you can take autocad out of your workflow with this. and
best of all, in the above price of linuxcad, you get a free cd for your
client or contractor, so they can open and edit your native linuxcad
files as well.

with your work completely migrated thus, if you find yourself once in a
while with some peculiar, legacy, odd-ball process that can only be done
in autocad, it is best to outsource this (cheaper than buying a legal
license) or if you are a large organization, bring your license-count of
autocad to just one copy, with all others on the alternative above.

oh! and by the way, where you find yourself using photoshop in your
workflow, you could find that cinepaint does a remarkable job.

am also trying to organize a workshop around cad, but this would happen
atleast 3 to 4 months down the line, and so far, chances are 50-50. so
once its finalized, will just mail the mailing list.

:-)
