dear all,

after struggling for nearly 1.5 years in bouts and spurts, have finally
got my dvd-rom to play dvd movies under gnulinux.

have still to figure out how to get those 4.1 speakers working (only 2
work for the moment)

in the meantime, may i recommend VideoLan software to all. this is a
gpl-ed software that goes way beyond xmms, and mplayer.

it can play any kind of audio and video format, it can also play such a
stream from any source including the net, and more importantly, it can
stream audio, dvd, even satellite tv (through a sat-tv card if you have
one) as unicast (to one node) as multicast (to several).

finally, it can do video on demand as well.

all that's needed is real high-bandwidth to enjoy the true power of this
software. yes, its GPL-ed.

i had to install a whole slew of libraries and check for dependencies
and stuff, but finally on the second attempt got it working. its really
not difficult to install though. just check the tldp.org howto document
to get started.

this really rocks.

:-)
LL
