i have noticed that but for standard distro's (redhat etc) the section of lilo where the second/third os's r mentioned (which would be windows in this case) are merely commented out. i am talking about knoppix etc (from the LiFY CD's). all u need to do after installing therefore is uncomment this section (check once to see if everything is in the right place). run lilo & reboot.... should work just fine.

new linux editions can boot from anywhere in your harddisks so there is no point thinking abt the placement of the partition.
The best and safest way of installing linux on a pc with preinstalled win98 ,winXP or just abt any OS is
use PARTITION MAGIC the easiest and safest utility. resize any of your windows partition and divide
the unallocated area into SWAP and Linux native. during linux installation it automatically detects your XP's NTloader and adds the option in lilo(grub)..
I think this should solve your problem..
