You can use ppcboot / uboot in place of bios program, but then you need flash memory in your system which will store the boot software, You will need to place the flash into the addressable memory region, and the processor has to jump to this memory address on power on, so you will need to take care. Another thing is that I doubt that linux or related software at this point of time are available for 8 bit systems.
