I think it's a bloody terrible idea. This mailing list has a number interested people subscribed to it, and those people don't have to do anything out of the ordinary to see what people are talking about or to answer questions. Their mailer provides a familiar environment that allows them to retain state and relate to the world in a way they choose. Throwing all that away to set up some half-assed web discussion system with a half-assed browser-based interface that demands more attention from users who just want to keep an eye on what's happening, let alone participate usefully in discussions, seems like a step in exactly the wrong direction to me, as far as signal-to-noise ratio is concerned.
