okay. that's the first step, but not enough. i'll do this. however, as a
consumer, an indian is usually helpless if he/she does not hand over
their personal details. the service requested could be denied. not so in
canada for instance.

any other proactive, more consumer/individual-friendly steps?
anyone aware of a consumer-rights group, or NGO type agency that could
be interested in this? anybody has contacts in newspapers, tv, news
magazines, that could take this up?

anybody a lawyer who volunteers to study the legal aspects of this?

yaar, its about time we did something about fighting for our privacy,
even if the battle is half-lost.

key focus areas for privacy policy for indians at:
1) banks, financial institutions, loan agents, credit card, debit card
agencies.
2) govt. agencies that procure, or sub-contract to third-party.
3) health institutions, insurance companies, other public sector
organizations.
4) educational institutions.
5) private sector: MNCs, indian companies, even small firms.
6) the obvious: junk emails, spam, etc.
7) telecom companies, utility providers, etc.

add your own. anyone on the list could take this discussion further to
the ilug-india mailing list. please do it, as i know first-hand this
menace perpetuates across the sub-continent.
