Ummm slight mistake here step 7 is actually step 6 and step 6 is step 7. So you got to reboot before trying swapon -a. Also another mistake is that I said that "IF" you are using rescue mode you have to reboot but no you have to reboot even if you are doing this on a running system because the kernel will need to read the partition table again which will be done at boot time. Also now that I notice you have mentioned that you use RH 8.0 so since RH has that excellent rescue mode available use it.
