I was wondering if anyone's tried to implement steg,
on Linux? and if so, using which algorithms etc? I was
trying to implement something myself, but am running
into tens of queries!
Could someone recommend any tuts/links which might
have actual examples or such?

This guy has done some good stuff , i played around with his source code ...some time back ...seems pretty workable . .. . but the algorithims are pretty involved .... needs PG level mathematics background....( includes wavelets and stuff ) ... has a pretty descriptive reference section ...dig deep ( if you reaaaally want toooo :)
