Hi,

Running 'make xconfig' on my 2.6.4 kernel gave the
following output:

C-Media 8738, 8338 (SND_CMIPCI)
Say 'Y' or 'M' to include support for C-Media CMI8338
and 8738 PCI soundcards.

Running "grep 'CMIPCI' .config" on your 2.6 config
shud give you something like:
CONFIG_SND_CMIPCI=m
(or a 'y' if built in)

ALso check for a file named "snd-cmipci.ko" in the
directory
/lib/modules/"ur_kernel_ver"/kernel/sound/pci/. If its
there just load the module and you neednt compile the
kernel.

Else you dont have support in the running kernel for
the chip. If that's the case, get the latest sources
(currently 2.6.4) and run 'make xconfig', browse down
to ->SOUND->ALSA->PCI Devices->C-Media 8738 and enable
it. Compile, install, blah blah blah, and you are
done!

Anyways, I would advise you to compile a custom kernel
as it loads faster and is much smaller than the
generic ones. Build one with support for all your
favourite hardware and you will never get the chance
to complain about another h/w detection failure.

Regards,
Bhaskar.
