Had heard (in the README or maybe INSTALL file of the app) that one of these
apps is on gkrellm also, but what's gkrellm?

Take a X11 dump file with "xwd" and convert it to pnm:
$xwd -out filename.xwd
$xwdtopnm filename.xwd > newfile.pnm
Now you can edit this file under any graphics package.
