The thread has become a GPL vs. other licenses battlefield which is not what I 
intended to discuss at all. The objective of the GPL is to rid the world of 
proprietary software, which it seems to be doing very well :-) .. That's good 
enough for me.
What I really wanted to know were concrete reasons as to why allowing closed 
source programs to interface with GPL'd code can be *anti-freedom*. This drug 
analogy is a good reason. Thanks for the answer Anirban :-)
