If you compile your own kernels, make sure .config has these set. (you can
also compile ext3 support as modules)
CONFIG_EXT3_FS=y
CONFIG_EXT3_FS_XATTR=y

as root, run:
tune2fs -j /dev/hdaXX
tune2fs -i 0 /dev/hdaXX

edit /etc/fstab settings to change ext2 to ext3.
remount filesystems.

wrt root filesystems, if you use an initrd image, you need to create a new
initrd. "man mkinitrd" for more.

edit your LILO or grub conf file to point to the new initrd image.

Run 'alsamixer' and set up the volumes and unmute the master and PCM
channels. Then run 'alsactl store' to store the settings. Should be enough.

Or if you are using KDE and artsd, open Control Center, go to Sound and
Multimedia -> mixer, and do the needful.
