The option for you is very simple... Go through the book and follow most of the command and their options of the three pages listed index. mostly everyone followed that way or much more difficult way. You are lucky to have a book. When I started, I didn't even have a book nor was I from *nix background. The only thing I did then at the blank screen was the `help` command.

Labour on it and it'll give you ripe results.
