try pinging 202.54.15.1 which is vsnl's dns server. if that works, then
the problem seems to be with your dns settings. login with root, open
/etc/resolv.conf
in that file enter your dns servers. my resolv.conf looks like
####### /etc/resolv.conf :: Begins #######
nameserver 202.54.15.1
nameserver 202.56.230.5
####### /etc/resolv.conf :: Ends #######
get the dns servers from your isp and put them in that file. that should
work
