I use LDAP Browser, its meeting my requirements...the things you have mention like insert/search/modify/delete/copy/paste/new OUs/DNs etc etc.... all these things i can do with LDAP Browser, its Java based program and to install it you just need to untar. And simply executing jar would splash the magic screen where you can populate/edit/search/delete the things and once you are done, you can simply export the ldif format to anywhere.....which would be backup for your ldap database(no worries for lbdm backup)
But i use it for Centralized authentication for [ local account + samba accounts and mail aliases] along with Address Book...That you can also try coz administration efforts using LDAP gets reduced to great extend!!!
